Sensex closes 66 points down at 18436

The Sensex opened at 18514, touched the high/low at 18566 and 18415 to close the day at 18436. Realty, Consumer Durables and Banking stocks lost the most.

The Nifty lost 25.45 points to close at 5541.60. Nifty Junior lost 1%. CNX 100 lost 0.56%, CNX 500 lost 0.50% in trades today.

Big volume shockers on the BSE today include DB Corp, Network 18Media, Mindtree, Page Industries, Ruby Mills, CRISIL amongst others. Turnover toppers of the day include Crompton Greaves which recovered today after two disastrous sessions where it lost about 30% of the stock value. Others in the list of top turnovers include SBI, Petronet LNG, Hero Honda, IRB Infra, LIC Housing Finance, SKS Microfinance amongst others.

Meanwhile, one significant news piece of yesterday is that Rakesh Jhunjhunwala, one of the largest Indian retail investor has almost halved his investment in Lupin, a leading pharmaceutical company. This was reported by the company in its updates to the stock exchanges. A quick poll on a leading financial website showed that Jhunjhunwala selling a part of his investment impacts the sentiments of the small retail investors in the script. Meanwhile, the script was down a little in the two days of trade. It closed at Rs. 446.95 on the BSE down by Rs. 14.60.

As of quater ending June 2011, Life Insurance Corporation of India holds 4.45%, Genesis Indian Investment Co Ltd holds 3.81%, ICICI Prudential Life Insurance Company Ltd holds 2.98%, HDFC Trustee Company Ltd holds 1.8%, Jhunjhunwala Rakesh Radheshyam holds 1.73%, Reliance Capital Trustee Co Ltd holds 1.68%, Government Pension Fund Global holds 1.46%, HSBC Global Investment Funds 1.23%, HDFC Standard Life Insurance Company Ltd 1.07% and DSP Blackrock Funds 1.02%

Broad-based buying interest drives Indian stock markets upwards

The Indian Stock Markets that had a positive close yesterday continued had a spectacular run today with buying interest seen in almost all popular counters. Buyers are seen both in large-cap and well as mid-and-small cap stocks.

The CNX Nifty gained 151.25 odd points today to close at 5471.25 and thereby gaining 2.84%. The CNX Midcap too added 156.35 points to close at 7799.10 points. The CNX IT is up 3.19%

Top Nifty gainers of the day include Sesa Goa (up over 6%), SBI, Hero Honda, Ranbaxy (all up over 5%), HDFC, HCL Technologies, JP Associates, L&T, Tata Steel (all up over 4%) and Hindalco (up 3%)

Amongst the top decliners are Reliance Infra and Reliance Industries which are actually marginally down by closing time.

The Sensex added 513.19 points to close the day comfortable over the 18k mark – at 18240.68 points. The BSE Midcap index gained 147.49 points and BSE Small Cap Index is up 140.44 points.

Sensex tests 17K level once again; ends marginally in green

On the BSE
The Bombay Stock Exchange Sensex has closed the day gaining a mere 22.79 points testing the 17K level once again. The Sensex closed at 16,994.49 compared to the previous close of 16,971.70. The BSE Midcap and Smallcap indices closed the day gaining 41.56 points and 69.32 points respectively.

All others, sans the Consumer Durables and PSU sectoral indices, closed in the green. Reality stocks are once again the gaining sector on the BSE. The Reality Sectoral Index gained 60.28 points today.

On the NSE
The NSE Nifty closed the day at 5088.70 gaining 0.17% in trade today. The CNX IT gained 0.16%.

Amongst NSE gainers today are Hero Honda, DLF, Suzlon, Ambuja Cement, ABB, Jindal Steel, GAIL, Sun Phara, Bharti Airtel and JP Associates. Amongst the losers are Tata Motors, Axis Bank, Wipro, Unitech, Ranbaxy, Hindalco, SAIL, HCL Technologies, BHEL and Power Grid.

Analyst Stock Recommendations – SREI Infrastructure Finance Ltd (BSE: 523756; NSE: SREINTFIN; ISIN: INE872A01014 )
Firstcall Research in its research report dated March 4, 2010 is giving a BUY call on the script. The script is currently trading at Rs. 74.85 levels and has a Market Cap of 8704.31 mn. Markets on the lookout for the next big theme; remains flat on Mar 4

The Indian stock markets are on the lookout for the next big theme to take a directional course. The markets had a pretty flat day today. The NSE Nifty that closed yesterday at 5088.10 slipped marginally to close today at 5080.25. It closed down by 0.15%. The CNX IT is down 1.07%

Top Nifty gainers of the day include SAIL, Suzlon (both up over 4%), Unitech (up 3%), Reliance Communications (up 2%), DLF, Reliance Infra, Sun Pharam, Tata Steel, Hindustan Leaver and Grasim (all up over 1%). On the other hand, top Nifty losers include Axis Bank (down over 2%), Hindalco, Maruti, Infosys Technologies, Cairn, JP Associates, BPCL, Reliance (all down by over 1%), Ambuja Cement and ICICI Bank (both down marginally).

The BSE Sensex opened this morning at 17,013.68, touched an intra-day high of 17,024.96 and intraday low of 16,888.05 to finally close a little below the 17K mark at 16,971.70. It may be recalled the BSE closed yesterday at 17,000.01. The Sensex slipped 28.31 points and is down 0.17%. The BSE Midcap and Smallcap indices are up marginally.

The Reality stocks index on BSE is up 2.5% today. Consumer Durables and Metals are up over 1%. FMCG, Capital Goods, Power, PSU, Health Care and Auto are up marginally. Bankex, Oil & Gas, Teck and IT are down marginally.

Markets take yet another flat day - February 19, 2010

BSE Sensex down by 143 points (0.88%); Nify down by 0.88%

The Indian stock markets had yet another flat session with both the indices staying range bound. The Nifty that closed yesterday at 4887.75 closed today at 4844.50 losing 0.88% in the process. CNX Midca Index is down 1.41% while the Nifty Midcap 50 is down 1.90%.

Top gainers on the Nifty today include Maruti, Ranbaxy, ABB, HCL Tech, ONGC, Sun Pharma, HDFC Bank, GAIL, ITC and Axis Bank (all marginally in the green).

Top losers of the day include JP Associates, DLF (both down over 4%), Reliance Communications, Sterlite (both down over 3%), Tata Steel, SAIL, Reliance Infra, IDEA, IDFC and Jindal Steel (all down over 2%).

The BSE Sensex opened the day at 16,256.53, touched an intra-day high of 16,301.94 and intra-day low of 16,074.58 to close at 16,184.70 compared to previous close of 16,327.84. The Sensex is down 143.14 points or 0.88 in the process. The sectoral index gainers of the day on the BSE is the Health Care index that is up a mere 0.10%. All other indices – FMCG, IT, Capital Goods, Oil & Gas, Teck, PSU, Bankex (all marginally down), Auto, Power, Consumer Durables (all down over 1%), Metal (down over 2%) and Realty (down over 3%) closed in the red.
