Indian stock markets rally; Sensex up 440 points

The Indian stock markets had a wonderful rally right from the start of the trading session after having a Dushera holiday yesterday. The SENSEX zoomed 440 points and closed at 16232.54 points up 2.79%. In fact, at one point of time, the Sensex is up over 500 points. The NIFTY closed at 4888.05 gaining 136.75 points or 2.88%. CNX Midcap closed at 6894.15 gaining 70.65 (1.04%) while the BSE Smallcap closed at 6721.55 up 76.65 (1.15%).

Earlier today, the Asian stock markets closed the day in the green. The European markets are in the green too while it is mixed bag in the US markets. The Dow Jones is trading in the green (Oct 7) while the Nasdaq is marginally in the red.

Top gainers of the day are Sterlite Ind, Jindal Steel and Axis Bank (each up over 8%), Tata Motors (up 7%), Sesa Goa (up 6%), ICICI Bank, DLF and IDFC (each up 5%), Hindalco, Tata Steel, SAIL, Reliance and Kotak Mahindra (each up 4%).

Top losers of the day are Bharti Airtel (down 3%), Ambuja Cements (down 2%), Ranbaxy Labs, Hero Motocorp and BPCL (marginally down).

Finance Ministry sources are reported to be saying that the Government is getting ready to infuse capital in the public sector banks. It may be recalled the Moodys downgraded the rating of SBI’s Tier I debt recently which led to the downfall of the stock a couple of days ago.

Global markets rally ahead of September expiry

Markets globally made a bounce back ahead of the September expiry. Every part of the globe is witnessing positive closing in the stock exchanges today.

It all started yesterday when the US markets closed in the green. The Asian markets that opened this morning started to rally with stock specific buying interest coming in. Hang Seng Index closed up 4.1%. Nikkei 225 is up 2.82%. TSEC is up 3.09%.

Back home, both the BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty had a marathon session and closed at almost the highest points of the day. While the overall sentiment is positive, the rally is largely confined to the largecap names and both the midcap and smallcap indices, though having closed in the green, didn’t show much improvement. SENSEX managed to close above the 16.5k mark at 16524.03 gaining 472.93 points or 2.95%. The NIFTY is up 4971.25 adding 135.85 points or 2.81%. The CNX Midcap however is up a mere 97.95 points or 1.39% and closed at 7169.90. The BSE Smallcap too isn’t that cheerful with an addition of 93.86 points or 1.36% to close at 7017.27 at closing time.

As many as 1134 stocks advanced, 302 declined and 91 closed unchanged on the NSE showing that the overall market breath is okay.

Top gainers of the day include DLF (up over 8%), Tata Motors and Jaiprakash Asso (up 6%), Reliance (up 5%), SAIL, Hindalco, Tata Power, TCS, BHEL, Cairn India and Sterlite Ind (all up over 4% each). BPCL and Cipla closed marginally in the red.

Anil Ambani said that Reliance Capital (BSE: 500111; NSE: RELCAPITAL; ISIN: INE013A01015) is in advanced stages of talks with Nippon for stake sale in Reliance Capital AMC. Earlier this year, a 26% stake was sold to Nippon Life of Japan for over Rs. 3000 crore. The stock responded positive at this news. The shares of the company are, at one point of time, up by over 5%. The script touched an intraday high of Rs. 411.40 and closed at Rs. 394.50.

The run in PG Electroplast (BSE: 533581; NSE: PGEL; ISIN: INE457L01011) continued even today with the script touching the 20% upper circuit today. The script closed at Rs. 493.95 gaining Rs. 82.30 by closing time.

Tata Capital to brand build Tata credit cards business; ICICI Bank up; Hero Honda dips into red

A leading business website is quoting that the Tata Sons will hand over the credit card business to their financial services arm Tata Capital. Meanwhile the CNX Nifty is up 3.75% and is at 4515 levels while BSE Sensex slipped a bit and is at 15056 up 572.89 points or 3.96

The Tata group entered into credit card services business in February 2006 but couldn’t do well. The business was off targets by its own projected figures. With the credit card business now into the hands of Tata Capital, the later will be able to manage it and will take the responsibility of promotion and marketing activities. The SBI - GE will be taking care of the underwriting and processing the white label cards. In the process, Tata Capital will get a sourcing margin.

The Bank Nifty is at 6605 up 5.04%. BSE Bankex is trading at 7540.14 levels and is up 5.21%. 17 of the 18 stocks on the BSE Bankex are in the green.

ICICI Bank is trading at 732.40 levels on the NSE and is up 6.65% so far today. SBI is up 5.48% and is trading at 1603 levels.

The Nifty losers list includes BPCL (down 2.7%) and Hero Honda (marginally in the red).

US Dollar cooled a bit while Crude is trading at $107.5 levels

Aditya Birla Nuvo to buy 56% of Apollo Sindhoori Capital

Aditya Birla Nuvo of the Aditya Birla Group has announced it will buy 56% stake in in Apollo Sindhoori Capital, a Chennai based broking firm. The deal is at a cost of Rs. 1.99B Rupees. Aditya Birla Nuvo will be making an open offer for 20% in Apollo Sindhoori as per the stipulated regulatory requirements.

Apollo Sindhoori Capital Investments Limited is trading at Rs. 57.40 up 8.40%. The Buy order book are at 105485 while the Sell order book is at 61386 for the stock on the NSE. The 52-week high price of the script is 557.80 while its 52-week low is 46.10

Aditya Birla Nuvo Limited (NSE: ABIRLANUVO) is trading at 1310.00.  down 0.17%. Its 52-week high is 2507.80 while its 52-week low is 1035.00
