The attempts to recover and stay in the green territory made during pre-noon went waste after the markets lost steam dragging the Indian stock markets into the red.
The BSE SENSEX lost 34.3 points and closed at 16467.44 points. It is down 0.21% today. NIFTY closed at 4940.95 losing 5.85 or 0.12%. The CNX Midcap closed at 7240.50 gaining 4.90 points or 0.07% while the BSE Smallcap closed at 7169.07 gaining a mere 1.01 point at 0.01%.
Top gainers of the day include Cairn India (up over 5%), ACC, DLF, Sesa Goa and Kotak Mahindra (all up over 2% each) amongst others. On the losing end are Tata Motors (down over 4%), SBI, Sun Pharma, Tata Power, Cipla, SAIL and HUL (all down over 1% each).
Volume shokers of the day include WABCO India, Euro Ceramics, FAG Bearings, Kamat Hotels, P and G, Arshiya Intl, Pennar Inds, Tata Metaliks, Mahindra Forg and Kaveri Seed Co.
SpiceJet (BSE: 500285; NSE: MODILUFT; ISIN: INE285B01017) was in news today that its promoters would infuse money via new shares and would be taking additional 5% stake in company. The script closed the day at Rs. 25.45 gaining Rs. 1.45 or 6.04% amidst a volume of 6.72m shares traded today.
Reports of Advance Income Tax Payments made by corporates are coming out. NTPC (BSE: 532555; NSE: NTPC; ISIN: INE733E01010) is reported to have been paying around Rs 721 crores for the period July-September. The stock closed at Rs. 163.30 gaining Rs. 1.20 or 0.74%.

The SENSEX joined its global peers and ended the day in deep red. The Sensex closed the day 16501.74 losing 365.23 points or 2.17% today. NIFTY closed at 4946.80 losing 112.65 or 2.23%. CNX Midcap lost a bit more and closed the day at 7235.60 losing 177.90 or 2.4%. BSE Smallcap appears relatively spared today. The index closed at 7168.06 losing 135.96 or 1.86% today.
As expected, the markets had a gap down opening and kept constantly falling till about 1:30 noon after which there was a little bit of reversal only to settle back in the red.
Tata Consultancy Services (BSE: 532540; NSE: TCS; ISIN: INE467B01029) is once again back at sub-Rs. 1000 levels. The script closed at Rs. 988.80 losing Rs. 27.15 or 2.67% today. Experts believe that TCS has a better story over Infosys and suggest a switch at this time as a medium term investment.
Indian Minister for Power Sushilkumar Shinde, speaking to a media channel said that the country may miss the power capacity addition target by 10,000 MW by the end of 11th Five-Year Plan on March 31, 2012. The BSE Power Index is down by 2% today with 18 of the 19 scripts declining. Sans NHPC, all the scripts in the index are down with Thermax and Adani Power leading the charts with losses of over 5% in each.
Tata Power (BSE: 500570; NSE: TATAMOTORS; ISIN: INE155A01022) went ex-split today. The script was sub-divided the equity shares of the company from a face value of Rs 10 to the current face value of Rs 2 each. The record date has been fixed at September 13, 2011.

Indian stock markets are directionless for most of the trading session with the lack of any queues to take any specific direction. However, they ended in the green after the European markets have opened. Sensex managed to close up at 17165.54 gaining 100.54 points while Nifty closed the day at 5153.25 adding 28.60 points in trade today.

The CAG report said that Reliance Industries (BSE: 500325; NSE: RELIANCE; ISIN: INE002A01018) did not relinquish 25% of total contract area and that it violated production sharing pact on KG D6. Analysts and the markets appear to cheering the script. RIL closed at Rs. 853.50 gaining Rs. 21.80 or 2.62% on the BSE today.
Suzlon Energy (BSE: 532667; NSE: SUZLON; ISIN: INE040H01021) said that REpower got an order to supply 47 wind turbines. The script closed at Rs. 41.95 gaining Rs. 0.65 or 1.57% on the BSE.

The Indian stock markets had a stellar rally today lead by Reliance Industries and the telecom stocks. The markets had a flat opening at the start, with almost all major Asian markets trading in the red at that time. They caught speed as trades continued to flow in and by the time the European markets opened, our markets had a clear direction towards the upside. The BSE Sensex is up 148.99 points while the Nifty closed the day up 46.35 points.
There are big gainers in today’s list. Including Reliance Communication which surprisingly is up 15.12%. The script moved from Rs. 93.60 to Rs. 108.70 in one single session. Its peer Bharti Airtel too has hit the 52-week high mark and close the day at Rs. 432.65 up 5.23%. Other gainers of the day include Mahindra & Mahindra, Axis Bank, Sun Pharma, Hindalco, Sterlite Industries, Punjab National Bank etc. The top losers of the day include Cipla, Sesa Goa, ITC, Power Grid, HUL, Infosys, Grasim and Bajaj Auto that were down marginally.
NTPC (NSE: NTPC; BSE: 532555), India’s largest power generation company reported its Q1 FY12 numbers. The net profit stood at Rs. 2076 crores up from Rs. 1841.9 crores a year ago. The script opened the day at Rs. 183 and closed the day at Rs. 183.95.

Shares of JSW Energy (NSE:JSWENERGY; ISIN:INE121E01018) got listed on the boruses this morning. The script got listed at a premium of about 2%, at Rs. 106 on the NSE and at Rs. 102 on the BSE. JSW Energy is a Sajjan Jindal-led JSW Group company. The script had a good listing with the script opening for trade above its issue price. In fact, the script opened way above the markets expectations and has come as a cheer for the investor community. Earlier, the initial public offering (IPO) was able to impress the investor community as it got subscribed 1.68 times.
JSW Energy opened at Rs 102 and has touched an intraday high of Rs 106.40 on the BSE while the markets expected it to list below its issue price.
As of 10:30 AM IST, the script is trading subdued at Rs. 102.45 after hitting a high of Rs. 106.35 and a low of Rs. 101.00 on the NSE. As many as 30882791 shares got traded so far with a turnover of Rs. 31880.31 lakhs.
